Intego Updates Mac Security, Antivirus Tools

Intego rolled out a spate of updates to its line of Internet security offerings at Macworld Expo, including a significant update to its Internet-filtering software and a new version of its server-side virus protection programs.

ContentBarrier is Intego's parental control program, letting parents set time-limits and design filters to manager their kids' Internet usage. The latest version, ContentBarrier X5, offers full recording of what sites have been visited and blocked as well as other activity such as chats, e-mail, applications, and keystrokes.

ContentBarrier X5 also offers improved content category filters and remote Web administration from any computer or mobile device. The software filters more protocols such as FTP/SFTP, SSH, HTTPS and online games and prevents external disks and volumes from mounting.
ContentBarrier X5 runs on OS X 10.4 and higher. A one-seat license costs US$50, with an upgrade from the X4 version costing $35.

Intego also released VirusBarrier Server 2 and VirusBarrier Mail Gateway 2. Both products are aimed at providing virus protection on servers running Mac OS X.

VirusBarrier Server 2 adds a GUI administration console; a full quarantine zone to isolate and repair infected files, and detailed logs of all infected files sent automatically to administrators, among other features. Those changes appear in VirusBarrier Mail Gateway 2 as well, along with the ability to scan all e-mail sent and received via OS X Server's e-mail server and to repair infected e-mails in the quarantine zone.

VirusBarrier Server 2 costs $300 while VirusBarrier Mail Gateway 2 costs $500. Existing users can upgrade for free.

Finally, Intego released an update for VirusBarrier X5, its antivirus program. The 10..56. update--free to all X5 users--improves scan operations. Specifically, scans stop when volumes being scanned are unmounted and the handling of scan scheduling has been improved, among other changes.

Norton Releases 2011 Security Products

Norton on Wednesday announced its 2011 versions of its Norton Internet Security suite and Norton Antivirus software. Norton also announced a new application “Norton Power Eraser” that is designed to remove the increasingly common fake antivirus malware.

New features for Norton's 2011 product lineup include new "reputation-based" detection technology bolstered behavioral malware detection, and new system performance monitoring tools.

Norton Power Eraser is a new freebie tool designed to detect so-called fake antivirus malware--malware that looks like garden variety antivirus software and tried to coerce you into paying for "full" versions of the software that do nothing at all.

Also new is Norton's Bootable Recovery Tool, a tool of last resort for when your PC is so hosed by malware that it won't start up, or your antivirus software won't even work properly. The Bootable Recovery Tool is a free download, but you need to enter a Norton product key in order to use it.

Facebook New Face Detection for Uploaded Photos

Facebook made tagging and sharing photos easier with its new face detection algorithm, a nifty little feature Facebook acquired when it purchased Divvyshot back in April. No more clicking on photos to select the faces of your friends as the new face identify feature will scan your uploaded photos and automatically select the faces in the photo.

If you have a Facebook profile, you've probably seen tagged images of you that you feel aren't accurate representations of your real-life person. The good thing is that tagging is boring and time consuming so a lot of people don't bother. Well, you better hope they don't find Facebook's new feature too convenient. Though it's not quite as drastic as Picasa's characteristic, which uses facial identification to automatically tag faces that you've tagged in the past, Facebook is making it easier to tag people with the introduction of facial recognition technology. Before, you had to select someone's face and then type in their name. Now, Facebook is automatically picks out the faces in photographs and just asks you for the name.

Over 100 million photos are uploaded to Facebook every day, making the social networking site something of a clearinghouse for random holiday snaps. Of course, those holiday snaps quite often contain people, and it’s in tagging those people that the whole process of adding photos to Facebook slows down a bit. The process is being automated, thanks to recent Facebook acquisition Divvyshot.

Main Features that should be looked for in an Antivirus Program

Installing a good, solid antivirus program on your computer is the key to internet security. There are many threats you have to deal with when surfing the internet, but nothing a good antivirus program can’t handle.

The question is which antivirus program to buy? To answer this question, there are a number of factors you should consider when researching antivirus companies.
Firstly consider the scope of protection the antivirus software offers. Will you be protected by every Internet threat that you encounter? These days, we are hit by viruses, spyware, and trojans from all directions. It is pertinent that the antivirus software can handle the job.

Secondly you always want to consider how user friendly the antivirus software is. Have you ever used software before that you knew was an amazing product, but you had no idea how to use it? It is very frustrating! The best antivirus programs are very easy to use.

Thirdly always like to look at how many features the antivirus program has to offer. From what I’ve noticed from my research, the more features the antivirus software offers, the better the antivirus software generally is. One feature that is very important and cannot be overlooked is how often the antivirus software updates its definitions. New viruses and malware are discovered every minute and it is important for your antivirus software to perform updates on a regular basis. I personally prefer daily updates.

Lastly, you would want to consider the price of the antivirus program. Depending on your needs, antivirus software will generally run from $20 up to $100. Be sure that you do not compromise your computer security to save a few bucks though! A peaceful state of mind is worth spending a little more protecting your computer with quality antivirus software.
